of the nation's biggest home builders bucked the market slide today. some of the best known builders, dr horton, lennar and kb homes spiked 5% higher on a jump in builder sentiment and drop in foreclosures in july. that's today. those same stocks are currently in bare market territory, off 20% or more from their peaks. now with mortgage rates keeping higher, consumers turning cautious there is concern the home builder stocks which had been on fire even before the housing recovery really took root may have been over bought. diana olick has the story. >> reporter: the nation's home builders are feeling good about their business, but you would never know it from the stocks. officially in a bare market, home builder stocks are down over 20% from the highs in may. big names like dr horton now at a one-year low and downgraded by rbc. blame it on rising interest rates. >> we're absolutely concerned about the rise in interest rates. the feds' actions to taper in october will make things worse, not better. >> reporter: rising rates are not taking much out of builder sentiment, which is up three points i

the home builders took a big kid today. all of these stocks, kb homes, dr horton down at least 1%. cheryl: also, after the close yesterday, coming out with earnings, climbing today. quarterly earnings report receiving a positive light. >> and nice five and a half% gain. investors focusing on the fact that they have cash. you know, they are in a better position now to invest money in marketing and research and development and new products. david: remember. it. cheryl: they did. david: hey, wait a minute. we were right. they were wrong. you have to keep it right here. you hear the bell ringing of wall street. what a difference. a very positive date. triple digit gains. does not negate what happened yesterday, but it comes close to showing the power of this market. this market wants to improve. it was to keep gaining no matter what wall of worry start and it. even 50 points to the up words. the biggest winner. cheryl: and here's a look your front-page headlines for the day. the second straight month of decline. fight the drought.

as tom horton, the ceo of american, are out with letters to employees today, defending the benefits of this merger. so for the time being, instead of these two airlines combining and becoming the largest in the country, they will remain where they are, with american being the third-largest airline in the u.s. after united and delta, and there you see southwest is number four, and u.s. airways the fifth-largest. according to the doj, this is all about a merger that would ultimately result in higher fares, higher fees. in fact, today, during a conference call, the assistant attorney general said we believe there will be hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars in consumer harm if this merger goes through. well, i'll tell you what was really harmed today. shares of lcc, u.s. airways' shares, down 12%, or almost 12% right now. the biggest single drop since august 2012. it's lopped off more than $200 million from the market cap. bill, we're showing you this chart going back to february 13. that's when these guys announced their merger. after that, the airline had a nice little run. t
